Create a Custom Multi-Day Desert Safari

You Dream it. We make it happen! Custom Multi-Day Desert Safaris are how we built this business. Overnight season is April-Oct.

We are open to a wide range of possibilities and are happy to custom build an itinerary for you, step by step. Our typical clients are photographers and film crews, families, and groups of friends from all over the world. We take into account all your interests, abilities, and locations and make suggestions to build your perfect outdoor adventure. If you know what you want and think it might be something we can do, talk to us directly to begin planning. Have special dietary needs? That’s no problem. Want to mix in Zion, Bryce, or other parks, monuments, or public lands on the Colorado Plateau, Mojave Desert, Utah, Arizona, or Nevada? There is a good chance we can make it happen. Your guide will sort out all the logistics and find the optimum tour given your time frame. We know lots of nooks and crannies to please the explorer in you! We build outdoor adventures of a lifetime.

Custom Multi-Day Desert Safaris of up to 5 days are possible. Groups of up to 10 can be accommodated with advance notice. Please call us well in advance to arrange all custom trips especially the longer the trip, the larger the group, and if during the months of APR, MAY, SEP, or OCT. Below are some examples of Custom Multiday Tours we have done in the past and often repeat. All custom tours require a phone consult sooner or later. At first contact it is also OK to send us an email with questions as well as your full phone number (international OK) and an appointment date/time/GMT+/-. This way we can be fully prepared to begin planning your adventure when we call. Our phone number is: 435-644-5506. Our email is dreamlandsafari@gmail.com.

PLEASE NOTE THESE CUSTOM MULTI-DAY TRIPS ARE INTENDED FOR LARGER GROUPS (4-6) WITH SIGNIFICANT NOTICE. For groups of 1-3 please try to coordinate with one of our single night scheduled trips to White Pocket and Toroweap. It is possible to do these custom trips with 1-3 passengers but it will require a considerably larger budget as the price is a flat rate for 1-6 passengers. Please see our rates listed below. All custom tours require notice of at least two weeks, but availability is questionable that far out. The earlier you plan this, preferably a month or several out, the more likely we can accommodate you on specific dates.

Maximum Destination Time to Driving Time/ Tour Flexibility

We know riding in the car all day to any spend an hour or two at your destination is a drag. We design our tours for you to experience the maximum and ride on the highway the minimum.

Utmost Guide Quality

Our hiring process is VERY selective. We select guides that are educated in geology, biology, environmental studies, outdoor recreation, or photography AND/OR experienced as guides at local venues. We ONLY choose guides that have a genuine passion for the outdoors and an interest in environmental protection.

Genuine Off-the-Beaten-Path Sights

Our camping tours destinations are never commercialized “tourist traps.” They are always bona fide wilderness areas, national parks, national forests, national monuments, wildlife refuges, or at least isolated BLM desert. Very rarely will lines or crowds ever be involved in our tours unless a commercialized area is specifically requested by the tour group.

Excellent Camp Cuisine

Our food is the kind of food you would prepare for your own dinner table. We’ll stop short of calling it gourmet but for a camp setting it might as well be! It typically includes a meat (chicken, steak, pork) with a vegetable or two and a starch. We can also accommodate special dietary concerns with little effort. Consider where you get to eat it too!! You’ll be dining overlooking views captured by no restaurant on earth!

Freedom of Activity

While you are not granted unlimited wandering, the freedom factor versus other tours is much greater. We have satellite messengers or radios and handheld GPS which you can use for safety. Most planned hikes will be guided, but if you want to hike up to the top of the hill behind the camp with your loved ones to watch the sunset before dinner, this can be done with a few minor provisions.

Setting Your Own Pace

You will never be in a hurry on a DST tour unless you want to be. This is why pace is considered a planning criterion. We think most people go on vacation to relax. We strive to maintain an ultra-relaxing environment in camp and on the road.

Deeper Interaction with Guide and Environment

Because our company focus is on quality over quantity, because our guides are highly educated and/or experienced, and because you have so much more time overall as well as at the destination, deeper interaction is possible. We encourage as much ground level interaction and learning as possible. Spatially, our vehicles are much more personal than the shuttle bus/divider type so that even on the road our guides are there for you.

Overall Experience and Value

Whether you are interested in a day tour, week long camping tours, or something in-between, our goal is to offer more value, more service, more nature and more experience to you. Don’t get caught in the tourist trap! Demand more for your dollar! We are certain that if our average customer tried to replicate our camping tours on their own, they would find it not only more expensive in the long run, but also not as interesting, involved, or informative, and much more laborious, frustrating, unsafe, and time consuming.

What is included on your tours?

Daytours include pickup and dropoff from local hotels, off-road transportation, natural history narration, guided hiking, photo advice, snacks, water, and lunch on tours of 6 hours or more. Our multi-day tours include all of this plus camping equipment, camp management, three excellent meals, stargazing, sunsets and sunrises for the photographer, and lots more time outside.

How soon should we book?

This depends on several factors, but our best advice is to book as soon as you finalize your plans. We do fill up, and if you have a limited window of opportunity, you may miss out. The smaller your availability window and the tighter your schedule, the earlier you need to book in order to ensure availability. The larger your group, especially if it involves more than one of our trucks (>7 passengers), the earlier you need to book.

How do I reserve my date(s)?

You are able to book online or by contacting us. We do require a 50% deposit to reserve your daytour date(s) and a 1/3 deposit to reserve a multi-day tour. The remaining balance is due the day of your tour at departure. Your guide can take any method of payment.

Can I pay via cash, Paypal, credit card, check?
If you are interested in paying by cash or check please contact us directly. You are able to book online with your credit card or you may contact us by phone to place an order. Because people have abused our policies and we have no recourse, we no longer accept PayPal.
What is your weather policy? What is your cancellation/reschedule policy?

These policies are all found on our Policies Page. PLEASE NOTE: Because of the constantly changing weather, targets moving over the whole region (our trucks), unpredictability of weather forecasts, the complexities of different road surfaces in different areas, the variable nature of storms as far as coverage and volume in this area, and the fact that some of the best photography weather is often on days with a chance of rain, we do not reflexively cancel tours without solid information. However, as your safety is always paramount in situations where incontrovertible evidence leads us to believe that potentially dangerous situations are probable, we will cancel tours if necessary. We will assume tours will run until departure time. We do not cancel tours until departure time as the most relevant information is at hand. Also if we know of a particular area or time that will be a problem we will often consult with all parties on the tour as to how best to go about re-routing, postponement, or cancellation. Trying to manage this on the phone hours before the tour is nearly impossible. If a party decides to cancel prior to departure time for reasons of weather forecasts, the cancellation will be subject to the standard policy. Cancellations made by us at departure will be accompanied by a full refund if no other solution can be reached. Also the information we have at any given time is often incomplete. For example, we do not know if the Wave is covered in snow or if the route is hikeable, whether roads are impassable in a given location etc….as we do not have a webcam at these remote locations. We do try to network to get better information if we can. Sometimes incontrovertible evidence is only found once the tour has begun. Guessing, followed by reflexive cancellations, we have learned, produces more poor results for everyone involved, than the strategy we take. It is very, very complex making these decisions. We are always monitoring the weather and have many years of experience managing the logistics that are affected by weather in this area. Please trust us to act in both our best interests.

What kind of vehicles do we tour in? Do you offer ATV/Jeep Tours?

All of our tours are run in Chevrolet Suburbans or Crew Cab Silverados for comfort and safety. We do not offer ATV or Jeep Tours.

What do I need to bring on a daytour/overnight?

The biggest things you need to remember on a daytour are a small pack to carry your own water (essential especially on tours with more hiking), jacket for warmth and rain (essential), boots or high top sneakers (optional but optimal in sand), any essential medication, and camera. Other items include extra layers when cold, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, chapstick, and other typical daytime sundries. For scheduled overnights bring all the same except an extra layer or two. You do not need a change of clothes. For overnights in April or October bring a warm hat and gloves. For custom multi-day trips just add a change of clothes or two. On all tours we provide water and snacks. On daytours of more than 6 hours and multi-days more than 24 hours we provide lunch. On scheduled overnights of 24 hours we do not provide lunch so please eat before you come.

What is the weather like there at various times of year?

You can find average monthly temperatures and precipitation for Kanab HERE and also read our BLOG POST on the topic.

We want to do one of your overnight tours, but aren’t able to make any of your scheduled dates. What are our options?

Depending upon our schedule, we may be able to add or shift dates. Please contact us with which tour you are interested in and which dates you are considering. Custom multi-days can be arranged APR-OCT depending on availability.

Guest Experiences on Custom Tours

We were looking for a special tour and we found it. Ron and Ladd took us on a tour that was custom just for us. We saw places and things we did not even know about. They took such good care of us and stopped when we asked and pointed out unique places and laced the whole trip with tales and information that is not in any travel book. The lunch we were served was so delicious and in a scenic spot to boot. Took hundreds of photos and will enjoy them for years to come. Highly recommend these guys and this company. THANKS!

Four friends and I spent three jam-packed days and two camping nights on a custom tour with Will, the owner of Dreamland Safari. We hiked in slot canyons, viewed dinosaur tracks, and puzzled over petroglyph panels, We camped at Toroweap on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, 3000 ft above Lava Falls and the Colorado River. Sunset and sunrise were memorable. Sunset and sunrise at White Pocket the next night were equally special. Exploring the otherworldly formations of white, orange and red was great fun! Will was knowledgeable, entertaining, and a skilled driver in deep sand and on bumpy dirt roads. He was a credible cook and provided delicious meals on the entire trip. I plan on recommending Dreamland Safari to my friends interested in exploring the hard-to-get-to, special places in southwestern Utah.

Our group of five booked a custom tour. We combined the overnight Toroweap tour and the overnight White Pocket tour. We hiked in slot canyons, saw numerous petroglyphs, saw dinosaur tracks and sea fossils, spent the night at Toroweap on the rim of the Grand Canyon. White Pocket was the highlight, hard to describe. We had two Geologists (Phds) in our group and they had never seen anything like White Pocket. Will is an energetic and knowledgeable guide. The sunsets and sunrises were beautiful. We stayed in roomy tents and the meals were good. A memorable experience.

We visited Kanab 2 years ago and did 4 separate tours with Dreamland back then. We are fortunate to be able to visit the southwest for 2-week trips for the past 6 years. The tours with Dreamland – The Wave, South Coyote Buttes, White Pocket, Toroweap – were always at the top of our list, so we devised custom versions of the previous trips. Meaghan and Will were great partners in planning this great adventure. Dreamland puts you in some of the most beautiful, remote areas in the Southwest. Thanks again!

We thoroughly enjoyed the tours we took. We were lucky enough to work with all three of the guides and each brought a different expertise in the geology and history of the area. Toroweap was a unique view of the canyon. Our slot canyon tour was my favorite part of the adventure. They were able to develop unique custom tours to meet our needs. I couldn’t have imagined the views and educational information we got while at the same time having so much fun. EXCELLENT!
